Our music department here at Bradford Cathedral has just gained its newest member as Janet takes over the role of music administrator from Luke, who finishes on Tuesday 14th September. Janet is originally from Lancashire but has lived in Leeds for the past 30 years. Janet and husband James, an accountant, have 2 children. Both have recently left home, their son is currently doing a PHD in maths at Durham, and their daughter has just started as a youth worker in Surrey.
Janet studied maths at Oxford University and previously worked for the UK maths trust charity, where she did similar things that she will be doing here at the cathedral. Janet undertook admin, organising summer schools and worked closely with volunteers.
In her spare time Janet is very musical: “I play musical instruments and sing. I’m a Soprano and I play the violin- I also play the hammered dulcimer and nose pipe but not as seriously as the others! I like experimenting with musical instruments.”
Janet regularly goes to church at St Paul’s Ireland Wood in Leeds and is very involved with volunteering there. “I sing and play, regularly attend the main communion service and I also do their payroll and am a keen volunteer.”
Janet also loves baking: “I make a lot of jam and am wheat intolerant so I do a good amount of gluten free baking!”
When talking about what drew her to the job at the Cathedral Janet tells us “the pandemic made me evaluate things and my children had just left home so I had this opportunity to re-think. I’d been doing volunteering work and a lot of things had disappeared or changed during the pandemic so I wanted really to be stuck into more of a community and have people I regularly interacted with rather than just on a voluntary basis.”
Janet particularly looks forward to being involved with the worship and getting to know everyone at the cathedral.
“I’ve really really missed music during the pandemic and I’m really excited to get involved with the coral aspect. If it fits in I’d love to have a go for the choir here as I know they take on amateur sopranos!”
We are very happy to be welcoming Janet to the cathedral team and hope you all get to meet her as she settles in. We wish her the very best!
