Brighouse’s St Martin’s Choir are the next visiting choir to Bradford Cathedral

On Sunday 17th July we welcome the Choir of St Martin’s, Brighouse, who will be singing at both the 10:30am Eucharist and the afternoon’s 3:30pm Choral Evensong.

St Martin’s Choir at a recent prom event

The Choir will be conducted by Sean Montgomery, who is a regular at Bradford Cathedral, both as an organist at services but also at the Wednesday@One organ recitals, and has previously supported the Cathedral between Directors of Music.

We spoke to Sean ahead of the services to find out more about the Choir, the music they’ll be singing, and what to expect from Sunday.

“The Choir is associated with St. Martin’s Brighouse and I’ve been involved for the last five years or so. The Choir sings a Choral Evensong at the church once a month, but they do sing for other occasions, such as an annual Council-organised prom. It’s not just sacred music, but secular music as well.

“We go out and about to sing – and these services at Bradford Cathedral are a great example of that. In August we will be singing at Halifax Minster.

“We also sing around and about at Christmas to raise money for local charities, sometimes in care homes.”

Music programme for this weekend

The music that is being played on Sunday has been chosen by the Choir.

“It’s very democratic in the choir – we always vote for the music! This Sunday is no exception, and we all chipped in with what we wanted to sing.

“We always try and stretch ourselves by learning new music, and everything on the programme this Sunday is new to us.

“The music is quite varied and balanced.

“The Eucharistic setting in the morning is by Francis Jackson. We chose that specifically because he passed away this year and it’s in honour of him, as he was a local musician – based in York.”

The Choir of St Martin’s, Brighouse is a small choir of eight adults, two to each part.

“It’s a chance for us to support the Cathedral community whilst the Cathedral Choir or on holiday. It’s a chance for us to experience singing in a different place, and it’s a chance for the congregation to hear some material that is perhaps not in the Cathedral’s repertoire.

“It’s also nice for me to be conducting a choir at the Cathedral instead of playing on the organ.

“I just hope it’s not too hot when we’re standing in the Cathedral in cassocks!”

You can hear the Choir of St Martin’s Brighouse at this Sunday’s 10:30am and 3:30pm services, and you can join in person or online.
